Although the UK officially left the EU in 2020, it was agreed that the EU’s goal of diverting 50% of waste from landfill for the UK by 2020 would continue to be in effect.

The targets were set in 2007 when landfill expenses were averaging £35.00 per tonne.

The average cost of a landfill over a ten-year period increased by a startling 270% to £130.00 per tonne. More landfill price hikes will be applicable for 2024 and 2025 because the current goal is only 45% diversion.
